Portrait of David Bowie at the Plaza Athenee, Paris 1977. A seductive Mr B gives a quizzical, oblique glance at the rock and roll circus as he places himself firmly and securely outside of it, straddling the avant garde with an album made almost entirely of otherworldly, atmospheric soundscapes and fragments. Most elegantly attired, with just a hint of make up, he cuts a Rudy Valentino-like figure that oozes dangerous sexiness from every pore. Hence the pink: what a colour for such naughty, free masculinity! Almost an effronterie to the eye, this chromatic pairing creates a surprising 'glow' effect, which rather suits our 'pretty pink rose'.
