  • Giclée (/ʒˈkl/ zhee-KLAY) is a neologism coined in 1991 by printmaker Jack Duganne for fine art digital prints made on inkjet printers. The name originally applied to fine art prints created on a modified Iris printer in a process invented in the late 1980s. It has since been used loosely to mean any fine-art, most of the times archival, print printed by inkjet. It is often used by artists, galleries etc. to suggest high quality printing. Our giclée prints are made using dyes or fade-resistant, archival inks (pigment-based), and archival substrates primarily produced on Canon, Epson, HP and other large-format printers. These printers use the CMYK (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and Black) color process as a base with additional color cartridges for smoother gradient transitions (such as light magenta, light cyan, light and very light gray), up to 12 different inks to achieve high fidelity reproductions and a larger color gamut, including the matt black effect of gouache.

  • This type of Giclée printing utilises a special Matt Black ink which achieves a high fidelity reproduction of the original, giving a special vibrancy and depth to colours and lines, which is why this type of prints look so beautiful. However, at the same time it makes the surface rather delicate, so please handle the print with great care (white gloves recommeneded) to avoid scratching it. Otherwise, the image has great lightfastness qualities and will not fade, and therefore can be exposed to the sun without any problem.
